Sharpton spent just $63,000—a miniscule amount compared with his opponents. Polls estimated he would get 5 percent of the vote. When the votes were totaled, however, Sharpton had been underestimated again—what was shaping up to be a constant theme in his life. He ended up garnering 16 percent of the vote, or 166,000 votes. He earned two out of every three African-American votes cast statewide. He did not 50 AL SHARPTON finish fourth either; in fact, he beat Holtzman. Abrams won the primary but later lost a close race to D’Amato.

Fighting with Sharpton was front-runner Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro; New York City Comptroller Elizabeth Holtzman, and New York State Attorney General Robert Abrams.

So why would Sharpton go through the effort of running if he knew he had little chance to upset the party favorites, such as Senator John Kerry, Senator John Edwards, or former governor Howard Dean? When his friend and mentor Jesse Jackson mounted the first serious run for the White House by an African American in 1984, he won five primaries and 21 percent of the vote, before losing to eventual nominee Walter Mondale.
