Woods for some years was a physician of the Canton Christian College (later Lingnan University) and linked himself with the work of the Boji Hospital as early as 1900, both in medical and surgical work. He approached Dr. William W. Cadbury and Harvey J. Howard of the University Medical School in Pennsylvania and persuaded them to come to Canton as visiting physicians. In 1912, Drs. Andrew H. Woods, William W. Cadbury, and Harvey J. Howard of the Canton Christian College were employed as visiting members of the Missionary Society Hospital staff.
Carl C. Jeremiassen was a sea captain from Denmark. In 1868, he went to China and was employed later by the Canton Customs Service, making the acquaintance of Dr. Kerr. He served an apprenticeship for two years at the Canton Hospital where he acquired enough knowledge of medical practice to enable him to commence medical work in the following years. Then single-handedly Jeremiassen went to Hainan in 1881, the tropical island divided from the extreme point of southern Guangdong Province by a narrow twelve-mile strait.
